Global markets are also up in the low double-digits, he added, citing a lot of activity. “We have 15, 16 more days of trading. We’ll see where the results go,” he said at the Royal Bank of Canada Global Financial Institutions Conference.

However, Athanasia warned that volatility, sparked by the conflict in the Middle East, could still impact results by the end of the quarter. “You’re probably going to see a lot of volatility that’s going to happen the last two weeks here,” he said:

Still, its global markets unit is confident in hitting its 16th straight quarter of Y/Y growth in global markets, he said.

Bank of America (BAC) also expects Q1 net interest income to increase at least 7% Y/Y. “Things are going pretty good there,” he said. Deposit growth is in low single digits, as planned.

In wealth management, “fees are up double-digits. That’s good for the first quarter,” he observed.

Meanwhile, lending has “come out of the gate pretty strong… We see good activity.”

Athanasia also outlined expectations for growth. The company expects to ramp up credit card growth to a 5% rate over the medium term. “We know we have to do better there,” he said.

BofA (BAC) also sees a path for another $4B in growth from its payments business. Wealth management targets 4%-5% net new asset growth in the medium term.

Bank of America (BAC) stock rose 1.4% in regular-session trading on Tuesday.

Bank of America chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan delivered an optimistic assessment of the U.S. economy during the Bank of America Financial Services Conference, highlighting that GDP estimates for 2026 have been revised upward to 2.8% and continue to build momentum month over month.

He noted that global CEOs are increasingly viewing America as “a place to invest” now that trade tariff concerns are working their way through and tax policies including bonus depreciation are being locked in.

The CEO pointed to strong labor market fundamentals as evidence that consumer spending remains resilient despite ongoing affordability concerns.

According to Moynihan, Bank of America customers spent 5% more in January compared to the previous year, with growth spanning all income cohorts, and he noted that no major economist projects unemployment exceeding 4.6% for any quarter in 2026.

“People are employed, [and] wage growth” remains constructive, he said, adding that consumers are demonstrating their confidence through actions rather than sentiment surveys—evidenced by “cruises being up double-digit month after month after month.”

Moynihan explained that artificial intelligence represents both a transformative shift and a continuation of the bank’s long-running digitization efforts. The bank’s AI assistant, Erica, which he described as having originated as a “small language model” before the term existed, now serves 20 million users and handles the equivalent workload of 11,000 full-time employees.

He emphasized that the bank invested approximately $3B in data cleansing over the past decade to ensure AI accuracy.

The executive detailed how Bank of America has maintained a flat headcount at roughly 213,000 employees—consistent with 2015 levels—while significantly expanding the business and increasing technology investment by 10% annually. He noted that the company recently engineered out 2,000 positions in just four months, demonstrating the ongoing discipline around operational efficiency.

“We’re engineering out that stuff while investing heavily,” Moynihan said, adding that expense growth has remained below the rate of inflation for six consecutive years.

Looking ahead, the CEO expressed confidence in the regulatory environment, noting that “deregulation finally coming” under the current administration will benefit the banking system through more balanced supervisory procedures focused on materiality.

Moynihan also highlighted the bank’s strategic expansion into previously underserved markets, including building out branches across Ohio, where Bank of America had no presence until recently despite its 240-year history.

According to the executive, the bank remains committed to achieving 200 to 300 basis points of operating leverage through disciplined execution and continued technology investment.

Here’s what other bankers and analysts have been saying about the AI bubble threat.

Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase (JPM):

“There’s always a surprise in a credit cycle,” Dimon said Monday, according to CNBC. “The surprise has often been which industry [is impacted]…you didn’t expect utilities and phone companies in ’08, ’09, and this time around, it might be software, because of AI.”

Dimon added he was concerned about a cycle at some point, which could result in a wave of borrower defaults.

“There will be a cycle one day … I don’t know what confluence of events will cause that cycle. My anxiety is high over it,” Dimon said. “I’m not assuaged by the fact that asset prices are high. In fact, I think that adds to the risk.”

Damir Tokic, Seeking Alpha analyst:

“In my opinion, the AI bubble burst with the Oracle (ORCL) earnings report on September 10th, 2025—that’s when ORCL stock price spiked, reversed, and crashed,” wrote Tokic earlier this month. “The first phase of the AI bubble burst was essentially a burst of the credit-driven infrastructure bubble—with Oracle as the poster child.”

Tokic goes on to argue that the second phase of the AI bubble burst was the selloff in software stocks, which he expects to be followed by a broader decline.

“It’s Phase Three that will cause a recession with the bubble burst—that’s when the stock market will likely ‘crash’ like in 2000 and 2008. Phase Three will likely start when the unemployment rate starts rising, specifically due to AI-related job losses—and this will start happening over the next 6 months. In the meantime, markets will likely be volatile,” Tokic added.

High Yield Investor, Seeking Alpha analyst:

“While mega-cap tech and software have been phenomenal investments in recent years, the market appears to be growing nervous about AI exposing and bursting bubbles in both, as software stands to be disrupted by AI, and mega-cap tech is sinking hundreds of billions of dollars into AI CapEx that may not deliver significant enough returns to justify the spending, thereby destroying shareholder capital,” High Yield Investor wrote on Feb. 19.

“Instead, we think that conservatively positioned and heavily discounted software lenders, as well as dividend-paying AI infrastructure companies, are the best risk-adjusted ways to play this dual bubble-bursting threat,” they added.

Bank of America (BAC) is reworking its credit card strategy as the bank boosts its target for profits from its consumer-focused businesses, according to a media report on Thursday.

The bank is set to introduce this month new incentives for cardholders with higher account balances, one of the actions it’s taking to propel annual profit from its consumer unit to $20B by the end of the decade, Bloomberg News reported, citing interviews with BofA executives. The unit’s 2025 net income increased 14% Y/Y to $12.2B.

“The focus is on growth,” Holly O’Neill, head of Bank of America’s consumer business, told Bloomberg. “Card is a big piece of this growth as we move forward and get more targeted with our outreach.”

Bank of America (BAC) is seeking to expand its customer base, leverage data to find and attract new clients efficiently, and reduce expenses. It currently has ~69M consumer customers and operates 3,650 branches across 39 states. It’s targeting 75M consumers by 2030, the article said.

In addition to helping the bank time its outreach to prospective customers, such as when they get married or buy a home, it’s also using artificial intelligence to evaluate their risk for potential default.

Part of the push in the credit card business is to expand partnerships with its existing co-brand partners, such as Alaska Air Group (ALK), Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH). Meanwhile, other major credit card lenders such as American Express (AXP) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) have been spending billions to boost rewards for premium cards and have added new partners for co-brand cards across travel and retail.

Still, Bank of America (BAC) stock dipped 1.6% in Thursday midday trading, as broader markets and the financial sector slumped amid risk-off sentiment.
