The U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict could disrupt the supply of chipmaking materials and push electricity costs higher, a South Korean lawmaker warned on Thursday, according to multiple media reports.

“The semiconductor industry expressed concerns that rising oil prices could lead to higher electricity costs domestically, which could ultimately undermine the price competitiveness of semiconductors,” lawmaker Kim Young-bae said after meeting with executives from companies such as Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) and SK Hynix (HXSC.F).

Kim said South Korean companies source key chipmaking materials from the Middle East, like helium, and any supply disruption will impact chip production.

“Logistics and transportation expenses will likely be the biggest issues rising from the situation in the Middle East,” he said.

South Korea is “highly dependent” on the Middle East for 14 items used in chipmaking, including helium, bromine and chip inspection equipment, its industry ministry said. Some of these can be sourced domestically or from other countries.

But 54% of its naphtha imports travel through the Strait of Hormuz, and supplies could be hit if the Iran conflict is prolonged.

South Korea sources 70% of its oil from the Middle East. The government said it has enough oil reserves for now, but it plans to secure alternative supplies. Lawmaker Kim said he is working on a proposal to deploy the reserves as needed for each industry.

Some chipmakers are downplaying supply concerns. SK Hynix (HSXC.F) told Reuters it has “long secured diverse supply chains and sufficient inventory” of helium, because of which “there is almost no chance that the company will be affected.”

Samsung (SSNLF), South Korea’s largest chipmaker, declined to comment.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing said it does not expect any significant impact currently, ‌and continues to closely monitor the situation.

Contract chipmaker GlobalFoundries (GFS) said it is “in direct contact with suppliers, customers and partners in the region” and “mitigation plans” are in place.

Global funds reportedly snapped up Taiwanese stocks in their biggest one-day buying spree in two decades, signaling confidence that chipmakers will remain AI-boom beneficiaries, even as broader markets face growing fears of disruption.

Overseas investors bought a net $2.77 billion of Taiwan equities on Tuesday, the most since December 2005, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The investment also marked a sixth straight day of buying by foreign funds.

The growing dominance of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has underpinned the broader market, with TSMC (TSM) now accounting for about 45% of the Taiex index, roughly triple its weighting a decade ago. The stock has surged about 30% this year, repeatedly notching fresh record highs. It produces advanced semiconductors for major tech companies, including Apple (AAPL), AMD (AMD), and Nvidia (NVDA).

The surge in equity inflows has also lent support to the Taiwanese dollar, though gains have been tempered by steady U.S. dollar buying from local life insurers. The currency’s relative stability may also reduce the need for foreign investors to hedge their exposure, the report said.

At the current pace, Taiwan is on track for roughly $7 billion in foreign inflows this month, a contrast to the roughly similar amount that has been pulled from memory chip-focused South Korea over the same period.

“On the capital appropriations, we would note the mix this time is skewed toward advanced front-end manufacturing and facility/clean room,” Bank of America analyst Haas Liu wrote in a note to clients. “While the approved figure on a quarterly basis could be lumpy, the accumulated number saw a meaningful jump in YoY growth, the 1st time since 1H24 when it prepared for meaningful CoWoS expansion and further 3nm capacity ramp following ’23 downturn. This is consistent with its aggressive capex guide for ’26 for 3nm addition, 2nm ramp, A16 readiness and advanced packaging capacity expansion and roadmap advancement.
