S&P 500 sinks: Top 5 losers and winners in the S&P 500’s worst session since 2022

The S&P 500 (SP500) on Monday finished with its worst loss in more than a year, with very few of its constituents emerging as session winners as investors act on growing fears the U.S. economy is poised for a recession.

The S&P 500 (SP500) ended down 3% at 5,186.33. It was the sharpest decline since September 2022 and the lowest close since May 6. Only 22 of the benchmark’s (SP500) members closed higher as the index logged its third consecutive loss. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP:IND) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) also slid for a third straight day.

The July U.S. payrolls report released Friday stoked worries that the world’s largest economy is tipping into a recession while the Federal Reserve has yet to cut the fed funds rate from 5.25%-5.25% after an aggressive cycle of rate increases in 2022-2023.
