Most shorted S&P 500 stocks in June

American Airlines Group (AAL), Albemarle (ALB) and Charter Communications (CHTR) lead the list of most shorted S&P 500 stocks as a percentage of float in June.

As of June 28, 13.30% of American Airlines’ (AAL) shares were sold short, compared to 12.71% at the end of May. Short interest in the U.S. carrier increased by 10.14% since mid-June. As of June 28th, around 87.24M shares of AAL were sold short, compared to 79.21M at June 15.

Earlier today, TD Cowen lowered its rating on American Airlines (AAL) to Hold from Buy citing heavy fare discounting.

Short interest in Albemarle (ALB) recently decreased by 9.52%, from ~17.13M shares sold short at mid-June to 15.5M at June-end. As of May 31, 13.25% of Albemarle’s (ALB) shares were sold short, vs. 13.62% at the end of May. The specialty chemicals maker was recently downgraded at Wells Fargo on potential cash flow risks and deteriorating lithium prices.
