Apple shows off AI-packed iPhone 16 line

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled several new products on Monday at its highly anticipated “Glowtime” event, including new iPhones.

Apple shares fell 1.4% in late Monday trading.

The new iPhone 16 is designed for AI from the ground up and “marks the beginning of an exciting new era,” CEO Tim Cook said.

The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch screen size, while the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen size. It also comes in new colors, including ultra marine, teal and pink, to go along with white and black.

The iPhone 16 has a new camera control feature, giving users more access to the camera and its features, including visual intelligence, available later this year. It also sports a 48MP fusion camera and a 12MP ultrawide camera.

It also sports the 3 nanometer A18 chip, which is up to twice as fast for machine learning and has 17% more system memory bandwidth. The A18 has a 6-core CPU and is up to 30% faster than the CPU in iPhone 15 and 50% faster than the iPhone 14, while using 30% less power than the A16 Bionic. It also has a 5-core GPU that is 40% faster than the iPhone 15 and 50% faster than the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 16 will also support AAA video games that were only available on iPhone 15 Pro, including Tencent’s Honor of Kings: World, thanks to the A18 chip.

The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus start at $799 and $899, respectively, and both are available for purchase on September 20.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant also showed how the new smartphones will use its Apple Intelligence system, which was announced in June at its developer’s conference.

Some examples of Apple Intelligence, which will be available starting in October, include letting users create new emoji by typing a description of what they want, or pulling photos and movies automatically to create a story line, Apple executive Craig Federighi said.

Other examples include letting Siri automatically delete duplicate photos or updating contact information, adding photos to an album or more.

iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max

The new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max offer new AI-powered capabilities, and come with larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays. It also has three new cameras, including a 5x telephoto camera, allowing users to record 4K video at 120 frames per second for slow-motion images.

The iPhone 16 Pro uses titanium to make the phone stronger and more scratch resistant and comes in four colors: black titanium, white titanium, natural titanium and desert titanium.

The new Pro line of smartphones also come with the new 3 nanometers A18 Pro chip, which comes with a 16-core neutral engine, powering 35T operations per second. The A18 Pro also comes with a 6-core GPU, capable of better ray tracing performance for AAA games.

The A18 Pro also allows the iPhone 16 Pro to have the Pro-Motion and Always On features, along with faster USB-3 speeds and more.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max start at $999 and $1,199, respectively, and will be available for purchase on September 20.
