Turkey seeks U.S. approval to buy GE Aerospace engines – Bloomberg

Turkey has asked the U.S. government for permission to obtain GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE) F404 engines it hopes to use in domestically-made military jets, Bloomberg reported Friday, attributed to Turkish officials.
Turkey’s military reportedly wants to replace its aging Northrop Grumman (NOC) fleet of T-38s and F-5s with the homemade Hurjet, which the GE Aerospace (GE) engines would power.
If the U.S. approves the deal, it would be another sign that years of tension following Turkey’s 2019 decision to buy a Russian air defense system is easing.
As part of plans to upgrade its air force, Turkey also is seeking GE Aerospace (GE) F110 engines to use for its Kaan fighter jet project.
GE Aerospace (GE) has a joint venture with state-owned Turkish Aerospace “for maintenance, repair and overhaul of F404 engines in addition to assembly, inspection, and testing in Turkey,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.
