Most shorted S&P 500 stocks in August

Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL) and Etsy (NASDAQ:ETSY) lead the list of most shorted S&P 500 stocks as a percentage of float in August.
As of Aug 30, 15.66% of Super Micro’s (SMCI) shares were sold short, compared to 9.67% at the end of July. Traders sold around 8.76M shares of SMCI short at the end of August, compared to 5.41M a month ago.
The tech firm has seen a downturn recently, triggered by two events: a disclosure by Hindenburg Research that it has short the company’s stock and the announcement that the company will delay its annual report.
American Airlines (AAL) took the second spot, with traders selling 97.03M shares of AAL short as of Aug 30 – up around 17% from a month ago. The U.S. carrier is set to exit the S&P 500 Index, effective Sept. 23, as part of a quarterly rebalance and will be replaced by Palantir.
Etsy (ETSY), which is also set to leave the benchmark index, had a short interest of 16.06M shares, representing 14.12% of the float. This marks a 12.1% increase in short interest from the previous month.
