NextEra’s Turkey Point nuclear plant approved to operate for another 20 years
NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) said Wednesday the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved its license renewal for Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4, allowing the continued operation of the units through 2052 and 2053, respectively.
Turkey Point was the first nuclear plant in the U.S. to seek another round of license extensions, which will prolong the reactor’s lifespan to 80 years.
After initially granting a license extension in 2019, the NRC took the rare step of reversing its decision in 2022, ordering a new environmental study after saying they relied on outdated climate information.
Generating enough energy to power the equivalent of nearly 1M homes and businesses, the facility plays a key role in maintaining grid stability in south Florida.
