Netflix says 60M households tuned in for Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) peaked at 65 million concurrent streams during the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, with 60 million households tuning in for the historic fight.
The fight between the 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul and the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Tyson drew enough viewers to overwhelm Netflix’s (NFLX) servers. Nearly 100,000 users reported issues during the fight, with many complaining about connection problems, frozen screens and the livestream failing to load.
In comparison, Disney’s (DIS) Hotstar served over 53 million concurrent viewers during the T20 cricket tournament finale between India and South Africa in June. Last year, Hotstar topped 59 million concurrent viewers during the World Cup final.
Netflix (NFLX) has labelled the event as a “record-breaking night.” According to a post by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Netflix (NFLX) CTO Elizabeth Stone told employees that “this unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team tackled brilliantly by prioritizing stability of the stream for the majority of viewers.”
“We don’t want to dismiss the poor experience of some members, and know we have room for improvement, but still consider this event a huge success,” Stone added.
