- A group of Canadian news media companies have sued OpenAI for illegally using their content to train its artificial intelligence models.
- The group, which includes the Canadian Press, CBC/Radio Canada, Globe and Mail, Torstar and Postmedia Network Canada, have alleged the ChatGPT maker “regularly breaches copyright and online terms of use by scraping large swaths of content from Canadian media to help develop its products.”
- “OpenAI is capitalizing and profiting from the use of this content, without getting permission or compensating content owners,” Postmedia wrote on its website.
- The lawsuit was filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and is seeking punitive damages from OpenAI.
- OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
- OpenAI and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) — which owns a stake in the generative artificial intelligence startup — were sued by the New York Times Company (NYT) in December 2023 over a similar allegation. OpenAI responded to the lawsuit in January and said it is “without merit.”
