OpenAI rolls out Canvas, enables Python coding, custom GPTs within tool
OpenAI rolled out Canvas today with new features, including the ability to run Python code and custom GPTs within the application.
Microsoft-backed (NASDAQ:MSFT) OpenAI first introduced Canvas, an artificial intelligence-powered writing and coding tool, back in October.
“It’s a product we’ve had in beta for a couple of months,” said Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer. “We are now enabling Python code to run in Canvas. We are also bringing Canvas to custom GPTs.”
Canvas allows users to enter a story idea, which then uses AI to build the idea into a composition. The user can access ChatGPT on the left wise of the screen to enter edits and updates.
The product can also be used to develop writing skills, OpenAI said. Users can enter a complete essay, story, etc., into ChatGPT with an option to put the text into Canvas. ChatGPT can then provide a line-by-line analysis of the writing.
Canvas is also useful in programming. Users can copy Python code directly into Canvas, which can then identify and fix possible errors. What’s more, the user can now run the Python code within Canvas to test it.
Canvas can also utilize custom GPTs, which is an advanced AI language model tailored to meet certain parameters or requirements.
The Canvas announcement was Day 4 of the startup’s 12 Days of OpenAI holiday event.
On Monday, the OpenAI released Sora, an AI-powered video creator, on Day 3 of its 12 Days of OpenAI holiday event.
“Demand for Sora has been off the charts since we released,” Weil said. “We are doing everything we can to bring it to developers and creators.”
