Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) have invested in semiconductor startup Ayar Labs, valuing the company at $1B, Bloomberg reported.
Ayar Labs, which is based in San Jose, uses light that allows for data to be transferred between processors faster and could boost the trio’s artificial intelligence accelerators by making them more efficient.
“The AI workload is really breaking the back of the existing hardware infrastructure, especially in interconnects,” Ayar Labs Chief Executive Mark Wade told the news outlet. “We’ve come up with a way to replace those electrical interconnects.”
Altogether, Ayar Labs raised $155M in new funding, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures and Intel Capital joining the round. Leading the round were Light Street Capital and Advent Global Opportunities, the news outlet reported.
Valued at more than $3T, Nvidia has upped the use of its balance sheet to invest in companies in recent memory. Earlier this month, Nvidia was among a group of investors that invested in the $700M private placement financing round by Nebius (NBIS). The Jensen Huang-led company also invested in Applied Digital (APLD) in September.
