The Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) SmartCockpit project with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) appears to have fizzled out, according to Reuters, with the two companies “winding down” their joint project to create a vehicle that would mirror the environment at home.
The project was created to use Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) in-car technology to personalize the vehicle’s temperature, navigation settings, and interior lighting, similar to vehicles made by Tesla (TSLA) and China’s BYD (OTCPK:BYDDY).
Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) began their collaboration in 2022 with the intention of creating a vehicle that was “the most wanted, most captivating place to be, even when not driving,” former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said in a statement. The first vehicle with a Smart Cockpit was expected to be rolled out late last year or early in 2025.
The symbiotic relationship between Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) and Amazon (AMZN) would have given Amazon a new revenue stream through Stellantis (STLA) licensing fees while Amazon (AMZN) would pay Stellantis (STLA) an incentive fee for drivers that sign up for Amazon’s (AMZN) music streaming service. Stellantis (STLA) also partnered with Amazon (AMZN) for use of its Amazon Web Services to store and update data across its vehicle lineup, as well as Alexa capabilities within the vehicles, both of which are still available.
Although the Amazon/Stellantis partnership on a smart vehicle might not have come to fruition, Stellantis (STLA) can still collaborate with other tech companies such as Google’s (GOOG) Automotive Services.
