- Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has formed a new group inside the technology giant to focus on “breakthrough” consumer products, CNBC reported.
- The group, known as ZeroOne, will be led by former Microsoft (MSFT) executive J. Allard, the news outlet added. Allard is credited with having helped create the Xbox gaming console and its Zune music player. According to Allard’s LinkedIn page, he became vice president of ZeroOne in September 2024.
- The ZeroOne team will be based in Seattle (where Amazon is headquartered), San Francisco, and Sunnyvale, Calif., the news outlet added, citing recent job postings.
- An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that Allard will be leading the group, but did not have anything else to add.
- Amazon has had mixed success with its consumer technology products, which include its Kindle tablets and e-readers, Alexa lineup of speakers and Fire TV streaming products. The company also launched a Fire-branded smartphone in 2014, but poor sales and reception from consumers led to it being discontinued in 2015.
- In February, Amazon held a splashy event in New York where it showed off a new artificial intelligence-powered version of its Alexa voice assistant.
- Amazon shares rose 1.1% in midday trading on Thursday.
