Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) How to Train Your Dragon held steady in its second weekend, topping the North American box office with $37 million in sales, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The animated sequel has now grossed $160.5 million domestically.
Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Years Later debuted at No. 2 with $30 million, an impressive launch fueled by strong Friday ticket sales of $14.1 million. The film averaged $8,711 per location across 3,444 theaters.
Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Pixar release Elio opened in third with $21 million, a solid showing that was front-loaded on Friday ($9 million) but tapered off through Sunday ($5.4 million). Its performance gave Disney (NYSE:DIS) two films in the top four, with Lilo & Stitch still pulling in $9.7 million in its fifth week and pushing its cumulative gross to a hefty $386.7 million.
Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PARA) Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning slipped to fifth place in its fifth weekend, adding $6.55 million and bringing its total to $178.4 million. A24’s fashion industry satire Materialists followed close behind with $5.8 million, representing a 49% drop from its debut.
The rest of the top 10 included Lionsgate’s (NYSE:LION) Ballerina ($4.5 million, -43%), Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends ($2.4 million, -54%), and Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) Final Destination: Bloodlines, now in its sixth week with a total domestic haul of $134.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10 was the Indian import Kuberaa, which debuted in 500 theaters and earned $1.7 million with a solid $3,428 per-location average.
In total, the top 10 films grossed $120.6 million over the June 20–22 weekend, signaling continued audience enthusiasm as summer movie season kicks into high gear.
