Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) was reportedly sued on Monday by the estates of three individuals who died last September in a crash involving a 2024 Model S. The vehicle, which was equipped with autopilot and full self-driving features, crashed on New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway.
The wrongful death lawsuit filed in the federal court in Camden, New Jersey, attributed the deaths of David Dryerman, 54; his wife Michele, 54; and their daughter, Brooke, 17, to the car’s “defective and unreasonably dangerous design,” Reuters reported.
The complaint stated that Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) failed to warn Dryerman, who was driving, that his Model S was unsafe, citing CEO Elon Musk’s 2016 statement that autopilot was “probably better” than human drivers.
Earlier in June, Tesla (TSLA) launched its upgraded Model S and Model X vehicles in the U.S., alongside a sharp $5,000 price hike, signaling a renewed focus on margins and premium positioning.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this year opened a probe into 2.6 million Tesla (TSLA) vehicles in the United States over reports of crashes involving a feature that allows users to move their cars remotely.
