- HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday told Gavi, an international alliance that provides vaccines to poor countries, that the U.S. is pulling its financial support.
- RFK Jr., in a video address made at a Gavi event in Brussels, questioned the group’s COVID-19 recommendations and has concerns surrounding the DTPw (diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis) vaccine.
- “I call on Gavi today to re-earn the public trust, and to justify the $8 billion that America has provided in funding since 2001,” the secretary said, Reuters reported.
- In a statement, Gavi said that scientific evidence backs the use of the DTPw shot, adding that, “Any decision made by Gavi with regards to its vaccine portfolio is made in alignment with recommendations by WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (“SAGE”), a group of independent experts that reviews all available data through a rigorous, transparent, and independent process.”
