Susan Monarez, President Trump’s nominee to head the CDC, told a Senate panel Wednesday that she has seen no evidence that links vaccines to autism.
“I have not seen a causal link between vaccines and autism,” Monarez said during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. She was responding to question from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
On Thursday, during the first meeting of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices since HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy gutted that panel and replaced members with his own selections, a report from CDC staff will be presented that rejects the idea that thimerosal-containing vaccines can cause autism.
Monarez is currently serving as the CDC’s principal deputy director and acting director. She was previously deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.
