- Plans for European gigafactories focused on artificial intelligence are speeding along, with the latest proposals calling for “at least” 3M of the latest AI GPUs, Reuters reported.
- “Together they have now indicated plans to acquire at least 3 million latest generation of AI processors in total,” European Commission member Henna Virkkunen said at a press conference, according to the news outlet. Virkkunen, who is responsible for tech sovereignty, security and democracy, added that there were 76 submissions proposing to set up AI gigafactories in 16 states at 60 different sites across the European Union.
- The proposals came from European and non-European companies alike, Virkkunen added.
- Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), headed by Jensen Huang, is the dominant maker of AI accelerators, with an estimated market share ranging between 70% and 95%, according to various research organizations. AMD (AMD), which is led by CEO Dr. Lisa Su, has a much smaller portion of the AI accelerator market.
- In March, the E.C. announced that it would allocate $23B in funding towards four AI gigafactories across the E.U. The Commission is slated to have more details on the location of the factories before the end of the year.
