Billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI launched an updated version of its flagship AI model, Grok 4, in a livestream on Wednesday evening.
Musk and his xAI team unveiled the new model during a livestream that started about an hour late, highlighting its multimodal capabilities, faster reasoning, enhanced interface, and improved voice interaction.
Grok is xAI’s response to models like Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s (MSFT) ChatGPT and Google’s (GOOG) Gemini, capable of analyzing images and answering questions.
Lately, it has become more integrated into Musk’s social platform, X, which xAI recently acquired.
“With respect to academic questions, Grok 4 is better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions,” Elon Musk said during a livestream Wednesday night. “At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time.”
The release of Grok 4, however, comes during a turbulent week for Musk’s companies. Just earlier on Wednesday, Linda Yaccarino resigned as CEO of X after nearly two years in the role, and the company has yet to name her replacement.
