U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) have warned that Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang’s upcoming trip to China could undermine American export controls and legitimize companies working with the Chinese military and intelligence establishments.
In a letter to Huang on Friday, the duo requested the head of the world’s biggest chip designer to avoid discussions with representatives of companies that are collaborating with the Chinese military or intelligence services or those that are named on the U.S. restricted export list.
“We are worried that your trip to the PRC could legitimize companies that cooperate closely with the Chinese military or involve discussing exploitable gaps in the U.S. export controls,” the Senators wrote.
“We hope you will agree that it would be deeply irresponsible for an American CEO to meet with companies that violate U.S. law and are actively developing military capabilities that could undermine U.S. national security.”
Their warning came after Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that his upcoming trip to Beijing, scheduled for next week, will include meetings with senior Chinese officials, including the country’s commerce minister.
