Marvel Studios’ (NYSE:DIS) The Fantastic Four: First Steps delivered a powerful opening punch at the domestic box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $118 million across 4,125 locations, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. Powered by strong IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) turnout and global appeal, the film claimed the No. 1 spot both domestically and worldwide, amassing $218 million globally in its debut.
The film, set in a stylish, retro-futuristic 1960s universe, introduces Marvel’s First Family in a high-stakes battle against Galactus and the Silver Surfer. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and is directed by Matt Shakman.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) Superman held strong in second place with $24.9 million, bringing its domestic cume to $289.5 million in its third weekend. Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Jurassic World Rebirth claimed third with $13 million, pushing its impressive domestic total to $301.5 million and global cume to over $708 million.
The box office saw a solid overall showing this weekend, with the Top 10 films generating $179.4 million and total domestic box office reaching $185 million, according to Comscore. Year-to-date domestic box office now stands at $5.199 billion, up 12% from 2024.
Fantastic Four: First Steps also earned $16 million from IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) screens in North America, accounting for over 13% of its domestic total—a top-tier result for the format and the second-highest ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
