China experienced a sharp decline in solar and wind installations in June, following the implementation of new regulations that could impact the profitability of renewable energy projects.
According to data released Wednesday by the National Energy Administration, the country added 14 gigawatts of solar capacity last month — a steep drop of 85% from the record 93 gigawatts installed in May.
This slowdown follows a surge in installations earlier this year, as developers rushed to complete projects before the policy deadline.
According to BloombergNEF data, China added more solar capacity in a single month than any other country managed in all of 2024.
Wind installations also dropped to 5 gigawatts in June, from 26 gigawatts a month ago. Thermal power installation rose slightly to 8 gigawatts.
