‘Fantastic Four’ holds No. 1 spot at box office amid debuts of ‘The Bad Guys 2’ and ‘The Naked Gun’

The North American box office saw a competitive weekend as Disney/Marvel’s (NYSE:DIS) The Fantastic Four: First Steps held onto the top spot in its second week, while Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) The Bad Guys 2 and Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PARA) The Naked Gun delivered healthy openings.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps continued to lead the pack, pulling in an estimated $40 million across 4,125 locations in the United States and Canada, despite a 66% drop from its debut frame, according to studio data compiled by Comscore.

The superhero reboot has now amassed $198.4 million domestically and $368.7 million worldwide, solidifying its status as one of the summer’s major hits. IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) screens alone contributed $9.3 million globally this weekend, bringing its IMAX total to $43.9 million.

Landing in second place, Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 launched with $22.2 million domestically from 3,852 theaters, averaging $5,763 per location. Globally, the film earned $38.5 million over the weekend, pushing its worldwide total to $44.5 million. The sequel reunites its star-studded voice cast, including Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos and Awkwafina, for another high-energy heist adventure.

In third place, Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PARA) The Naked Gun reboot debuted with $17 million domestically from 3,344 theaters, averaging $5,084 a screen. Starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the comedy reboot drew both nostalgia fans and newcomers, generating $28.5 million worldwide in its first weekend.

James Gunn’s Superman continues to show staying power in its fourth week, pulling in $13.9 million for Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD), bringing its North American total to $316.2 million and a global haul of $551.2 million.

Rounding out the top five, Universal’s (CMCSA) Jurassic World Rebirth added $8.7 million in its fifth frame, with its domestic gross reaching $317.6 million and its global earnings climbing to a staggering $766 million.

Neon’s Together, a new horror drama starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie, opened in sixth place with $6.8 million, offering counter-programming to the summer’s blockbuster-heavy slate.
