Meta Platforms’ (NASDAQ:META) text-based social media app Threads now has over 400M monthly active users, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Tuesday. That represents a gain of over 20M users since last month.
While the platform’s growth outpaced that of TikTok, Instagram, and ChatGPT in terms of initial user acquisition at launch in July 2023, its current total is still below its direct rival X’s user base of 600M.
The Meta-owned app saw its daily active users more than double to 115.1M across Android and iOS as of June 2025; Musk’s platform X saw only a 15.2% growth in DAUs but was ahead at 132M. Threads currently also lags behind X in terms of daily web visits.
“This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come,” Mosseri said in a post.
Last month, Meta appointed longtime company employee Connor Hayes to helm Threads and take over responsibilities from Mosseri, who was overseeing it along with Instagram. Hayes will assume the new role by mid-September and will report directly to Mosseri.
