KPop Demon Hunters has become the most-watched movie of all time on the Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) streaming platform after tallying an extraordinary 236 million views in just 67 days since its June 20 release. That tally blew past the previous record-holder Red Notice’s 230.9 million views. Interestingly, the viewership momentum was largely organic as the film started on a slow trajectory following its June 20 debut.
The animated musical, about a K-pop girl group who fight demons, has achieved rapid and unprecedented global chart success for both its film and soundtrack. When Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) released a sing-along version theatrically, it earned over $19 million in just one weekend across about 1,700 theaters to top the box office charts.
KPop Demon Hunters was primarily produced by Sony Pictures Animation (SONY) and released by Netflix (NFLX). The film was produced as part of a $100 million deal struck between Sony (SONY) and Netflix (NFLX) in 2021 for direct-to-streaming films. Talks of a KPop sequel are reportedly already taking place.
The theatrical release provided a late summer boost for Marcus Theatres (MCS), Regal Cinemas, Alamo Drafthoues, and some Cinemark (CNK) theaters, while AMC Entertainment (AMC) missed out on the buzz by not sliding KPop Demon Hunters into its schedule.
