Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially launched its Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, giving local businesses and government agencies the ability to run workloads and securely store content within the country.
The tech giant is committing more than NZ$7.5B to build, connect, and operate the new infrastructure region. This investment is expected to generate over 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually and contribute around NZ$10.8B to New Zealand’s GDP over the coming years.
The new AWS Region opens with three Availability Zones, adding to AWS’s global infrastructure of 120 Availability Zones across 38 geographic regions. This expansion offers customers greater resilience, lower latency, and improved data residency options.
A wide range of organizations, including AMP New Zealand, Kiwibank, Ministry of Transport, New Zealand Post, One New Zealand, TVNZ, University of Auckland, Wellington City Council, and Xero, to benefit from the expansion.
AWS has also partnered with local and global firms such as Accenture, Deloitte, Datacom, and MongoDB to help accelerate digital transformation across the economy.
As part of its skills initiative, AWS has pledged to train 100,000 New Zealanders in cloud technologies, with more than 50,000 already trained.
From day one, the AWS New Zealand Region will run on 100% renewable energy, powered by Mercury NZ’s Turitea South wind farm under a long-term supply agreement. This supports Amazon’s global pledge to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.
With this launch, AWS is strengthening its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region, supporting digital transformation, and providing New Zealand customers with faster, more secure, and more resilient cloud services.
