Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) delivered another horror hit this weekend as The Conjuring: Last Rites scared up an estimated $83.0 million in its North American debut, playing in 3,802 theaters for a strong per-theater average of $21,831, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore.
The latest entry in the Conjuring franchise also earned $104 million overseas, pushing its global launch to $187 million. Directed by Michael Chaves, the supernatural thriller reunites Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in their final outing as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, joined by a cast that includes Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Steve Coulter and Rebecca Calder.
IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) contributed significantly to the film’s success, with $14.3 million globally, the largest September IMAX opening ever and the best domestic IMAX debut for a horror release.
