Warner Bros. (NASDAQ:WBD) scored a strong opening this weekend as Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another led the domestic box office with $22.4 million across 3,634 theaters, averaging $6,164 per location, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore.
The film also pulled in $26.1 million internationally, bringing its global debut to an impressive $48.5 million. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, the action-drama marks Anderson’s biggest launch in years.
In second place, Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) family-friendly Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie opened to $13.7 million in the United States and Canada, boosted by another $5.5 million overseas for a $19.2 million global weekend.
Sony/Crunchyroll’s (NYSE:SONY) anime blockbuster Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle claimed third, adding $7.1 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $118.2 million to date.
Horror continued to draw crowds as Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) The Conjuring: Last Rites secured fourth with $6.9 million, lifting its domestic cume to $161.5 million. Lionsgate (NYSE:LION) rounded out the top five with The Strangers: Chapter 2, which debuted at $5.9 million.
Among specialty openings, Prathyangira Cinemas’ They Call Him OG landed in ninth place with $1.4 million, while Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) romantic comedy A Big Bold Beautiful Journey closed the top 10 at $1.25 million.
IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) also reported a strong weekend led by One Battle After Another, which generated $7.5 million globally on its premium large format screens, including $4.6 million in North America.
