OpenAI’s Sora artificial intelligence video generator will use copyrighted content by default, with entertainment studios given the option to opt out, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The ChatGPT maker, which is backed by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and others, told talent agencies and studios about the opt-out process over the past week, the news outlet added, citing people familiar with the matter. Additionally, OpenAI intends to release a new version of its Sora generator in the next several days, The Journal added. Sora was launched in December 2024 to significant fanfare and attention.
The people added that a new version of the video generator would have a similar copyright protection as its image generator tool, which was released in April. OpenAI also has deals with various studios to keep copyrighted characters out of its tools, some of the people added.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
