Release party for Taylor Swift’s new album tops weekend domestic box office with $33M

A Taylor Swift listening party movie featuring additional content from her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, has topped the weekend domestic box office with a haul of $33M from about 3,700 theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore.

The approximately 89-minute film, titled The Official Release Party of a Showgirl and distributed by the world’s largest cinema chain, AMC (NYSE:AMC), includes an exclusive music video premiere and personal reflections by Swift on the songs in the album.

This is AMC’s (NYSE:AMC) second movie about Swift, following 2023’s hugely successful Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. That release generated $261.7M worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

Turning to second place in this weekend’s domestic box office draw, Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) One Battle After Another brought in $11.2M, a 49% drop from last weekend when it debuted with $22.4M. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, marks director Paul Thomas Anderson’s biggest launch in years.

Third place saw another new release in A24’s The Smashing Machine, which pulled in $6M from more than 3,300 locations. The film, directed by Benny Safdie, follows the life of former American wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr, who is portrayed by Dwayne Johnson.

Rounding out the top five was Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) family-friendly Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie with $5.2M and Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) The Conjuring: Last Rites with $4.1M.

A notable entrant on this weekend’s domestic box office top ten list was Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) re-release of James Cameron’s 2022 blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water. The film placed seventh with a haul of $3.2M. The movie’s return to theaters comes a few months ahead of the release of its sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, in December.
