OpenAI raises antitrust concerns in EU, targeting Google, Microsoft and Apple: report

  • OpenAI (OPENAI) has raised antitrust concerns in the European Union, targeting some of its biggest partners, Bloomberg reported.
  • The ChatGPT maker met with European Commission antitrust chief Teresa Ribera, on Sept. 24, and specifically mentioned Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the news outlet added, citing a person familiar with the matter. Among the issues discussed were “difficulties” OpenAI is dealing with “in competing with entrenched companies” and asked the regulators to look into matters to “avoid the lock-in of customers by large platforms,” the news outlet added, citing notes from the meeting.
  • Microsoft is one of OpenAI’s largest financial backers and announced a “multi-billion” dollar investment into the ChatGPT maker in January 2023, a move which helped usher in the generative artificial intelligence spending boom. Last year, Apple announced that it was working with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri to help alleviate some problems with the voice assistant.
  • Google, Microsoft, Apple and OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
