Air India is in advanced discussions with Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF) (OTCPK:EADSY) and Boeing (NYSE:BA) over a potential order for as many as 300 new aircraft, including up to 100 wide-body jets, as part of its long-term fleet renewal and international expansion strategy, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The talks build on previous negotiations earlier this year that centered on 200 narrow-body planes and 25–30 wide-body aircraft, but the scope has since widened significantly. Adding more long-haul aircraft would allow Air India to modernize its fleet, replace aging models, and expand its global network under its rebranding as a full-scale international carrier.
In June, Reuters reported that Air India was exploring a follow-on order for around 200 narrow-body jets, complementing a record-breaking purchase in 2023. The latest discussions indicate that the airline’s ambitions have grown, with total new orders possibly reaching up to 300 planes.
Industry sources noted that it remains unclear how many of the new jets would be firm commitments versus purchase options.
The renewed push comes as Air India continues to strengthen its international operations and reputation following recent operational challenges, including the June crash of a Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad, which resulted in the deaths of 260 passengers.
If finalized, the additional order would underscore Air India’s transformation into a competitive global airline under the Tata Group’s ownership, deepening its partnerships with both U.S. and European manufacturers.
