Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) said Friday it is introducing new parental controls and safety measures on its platforms to watch over and manage teen interactions with AI characters.
The company said the new supervision tools will help parents make informed decisions about the AI characters their teens chat with.
Parents will now be able to turn off their teen’s access to one-on-one chats with AI characters selectively or entirely. They will also get insights into the topics their teens are chatting about with AI characters and can set time limits for daily interactions, the company said.
Meta said its AI characters are designed to not engage in discussions on topics such as self-harm, suicide, romance, or disordered eating, and that teens will only be allowed to talk about subjects like education, sports, and hobbies.
The company will roll out the features on its Teen Accounts, starting with Instagram, in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia early next year, with other regions to follow later.
