Universal (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Blumhouse’s Black Phone 2 easily topped the weekend box office, opening to $26.5 million from 3,411 theaters, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The horror sequel, featuring Ethan Hawke reprising his chilling role as The Grabber, also debuted strongly overseas with $15.5 million from 72 markets, giving it a $42 million global launch.
Disney’s ‘Tron: Ares’ holds in second
After a strong debut last weekend, Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Tron: Ares held the No. 2 spot with $11.1 million in its sophomore frame, bringing its domestic total to $54.6 million and pushing worldwide earnings past $103 million. The sci-fi adventure follows a sentient program dispatched from the digital grid into the real world in the franchise’s first live-action installment in over a decade.
‘One Battle After Another’ and ‘Roofman’ round out top five
Lionsgate’s (NYSE:LION) comedy Good Fortune, starring Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen, opened third with $6.2 million across 2,990 locations in the United States and Canada.
In fourth place, Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) One Battle After Another, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, earned $4 million in its fourth weekend for a domestic cume of nearly $62 million.
Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PSKY) Roofman, the true-crime drama starring Channing Tatum, took fifth with $3.7 million, bringing its North American haul to $15.5 million.
Faith-based, genre and international titles
Angel Studios’ historical drama Truth & Treason debuted sixth with $2.7 million, while Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) family release Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie ranked seventh at $1.65 million.
Warner Bros.’ (NASDAQ:WBD) horror sequel The Conjuring: Last Rites took eighth ($1.57 million), and Amazon MGM’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) After the Hunt, which expanded to over 1,200 theaters, climbed to ninth ($1.55 million).
In tenth, a tie between anime feature Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – Infinity Castle and Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) music drama Soul on Fire rounded out the top 10 with about $1.3 million each.
All told, the weekend’s top 10 films generated $60.3 million in domestic box office receipts.
IMAX and specialty highlights
IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) screens contributed $6.5 million globally, led by Tron: Ares with $4.5 million. Specialty openings included MUBI’s The Mastermind, Neon’s It Was Just an Accident, and Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, each posting solid per-theater averages in limited release, Comscore said.
