India’s government has proposed new legal obligations for AI and social media companies to handle a growing number of deepfakes online by mandating them to label such content as AI-generated, Reuters reported.
The potential for misuse of generative AI tools “to cause user harm, spread misinformation, manipulate elections, or impersonate individuals has grown significantly,” India’s IT ministry said in a release explaining the intent behind the move, the report added.
The proposed rules mandate social media firms to require their users to disclose if they are uploading deepfake content, the report noted.
