‘Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc’ slashes to No. 1 with $17.3M debut

Sony/Crunchyroll’s (NYSE:SONY) Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc tore through the North American box office this weekend, opening at No. 1 with $17.25 million from 3,003 locations, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The R-rated anime feature — already a global sensation — delivered a strong $5,744 per-theater average, marking another milestone for anime’s growing theatrical footprint.

The film brings the hit manga and anime series to the big screen for the first time, following Denji’s violent evolution into Chainsaw Man and his new confrontation with the mysterious Reze amid a deadly clash between devils and hunters.

Universal’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Black Phone 2 held second place with $13 million, pushing its domestic total past $49 million after two weekends. Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PSKY) Regretting You debuted in third with $12.85 million in 3,393 theaters, while 20th Century Studios’ (NYSE:DIS) Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere opened fourth with $9.1 million, chronicling the making of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 Nebraska album.

Rounding out the top five, Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Tron: Ares earned $4.9 million, lifting its cume in the United States and Canada to $63.4 million in its third weekend.

Other newcomers included Neon’s Shelby Oaks ($2.35 million, 7th place) and Fathom’s re-release of ParaNorman (Remastered), which brought in just under $1 million as families returned to theaters ahead of Halloween.

Meanwhile, Focus Features’ (NASDAQ:CMCSA) limited release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia posted one of the year’s best platform openings, taking $690,000 from only 17 locations for a per-theater average of over $40,000.

IMAX (NYSE:IMAX) also enjoyed a strong weekend, with Chainsaw Man generating $5.4 million globally on large-format screens — about 19% of its North American total — and pushing IMAX’s worldwide box office haul for the title past $13 million.

Next weekend’s spotlight shifts to the wide rollout of Bugonia and several Halloween re-releases, setting up a strong close to October for genre fans.
