Meta confirms $600B capex to build AI infrastructure in US

Meta Platforms (META) provided an outline for its massive $600B in capital expenditures through 2028 to build out artificial intelligence-related infrastructure, such as data centers, in the U.S.

Meta shares were down 1.8% by noon trading on Friday.

“Data centers are crucial to reaching these goals and helping America maintain its technological edge,” Meta said. “That’s why we’re investing in building industry-leading AI data centers right here in the US. We’re committing over $600 billion in the US by 2028 to support AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce expansion — and our investments are already having an impact.”

In addition to the data centers themselves, Meta is also working with local utilities to acquire the water and electricity necessary to run them. Over the past two months, Meta has revealed plans for new or expanded data centers in El Paso, Texas; Montgomery, Ala.; and Kansas City, Mo.

The company said it plans to be “water positive” by 2030 at its data centers. For example, it expects its El Paso data center to restore 200% of the water consumed there back to local watersheds.

The $600B figure was first revealed in early September when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was attending a gathering of tech leaders at the White House Rose Garden.

Fellow tech titan Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) recently increased its capex figure for 2025 to range from $91B to $93B. Meanwhile, Microsoft (MSFT) plans to spend $88.7B during the full fiscal year 2026 on capex. Its capex totaled $64.55B in fiscal 2025 and $44.8B in fiscal 2024.
