A Chicago federal jury has ordered Boeing (BA) to pay over $28 million to the family of Shikha Garg, a UN consultant who died in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX crash.
The total compensation to Garg’s family, including interest and additional payments, is about $35.85 million, and Boeing (BA) agreed not to appeal the verdict, Reuters reported. The case is the first civil trial verdict in the many lawsuits related to the two deadly 737 MAX crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia that together killed 346 people.
“While we have resolved the vast majority of these claims through settlements, families are also entitled to pursue their claims through damages trials in court and we respect their right to do so,” a Boeing (BA) spokeswoman said, according to the report.
The crash was linked to a faulty automated flight control system in the 737 MAX jets, which caused Boeing to face multiple lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny.
