Tech Voices: White House vs. Alibaba, Anthropic on Claude cyberattack

Seeking Alpha’s roundup of statements, announcements, and remarks that could impact the technology sector.

  • The White House has reportedly accused Alibaba (BABA) of providing technological support to the Chinese military against U.S. targets.

The Trump administration made the claims in a national security memo that contained details about how it believes the company has been supporting certain Chinese army capabilities that pose a threat to U.S. security, according to Reuters, which cited the Financial Times.

  • AI developer Anthropic (ANTHRO) said a Chinese state-sponsored group used its Claude Code AI-powered coding tool to execute cyberattacks on around 30 companies and organizations around the world, succeeding in a “small number” of cases.

“The operation targeted large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing companies, and government agencies. We believe this is the first documented case of a large-scale cyberattack executed without substantial human intervention,” Anthropic said in a long blog post.

“These attacks are likely to only grow in their effectiveness. To keep pace with this rapidly-advancing threat, we’ve expanded our detection capabilities and developed better classifiers to flag malicious activity,” the company added.

The company also warned of a “fundamental change” in cybersecurity.

“We advise security teams to experiment with applying AI for defense in areas like Security Operations Center automation, threat detection, vulnerability assessment, and incident response. We also advise developers to continue to invest in safeguards across their AI platforms, to prevent adversarial misuse,” Anthropic said.

Privately held Anthropic (ANTHRO) counts Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet’s Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) as major investors.

Other leading developers of AI-powered coding tools include OpenAI (OPENAI), which is backed by Microsoft (MSFT); DeepSeek (DEEPSEEK); Google (GOOG) (GOOGL); and Amazon (AMZN).
