Lionsgate’s (LION) Now You See Me: Now You Don’t materialized at the top of the domestic box office this weekend, launching with $21.3 million from 3,403 locations, according to studio estimates compiled by Comscore. The film posted a healthy per-theater average (PTA) of $6,259 and added another $54.2 million from 64 international markets, bringing its global opening total to $75.5 million.
Director Ruben Fleischer returns to the franchise with a blend of returning stars — Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher and Morgan Freeman — and new faces including Justice Smith and Rosamund Pike, as a new generation of illusionists teams up with the original Four Horsemen for a fresh round of cinematic sleight-of-hand.
Paramount’s (PSKY) The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright, sprinted into second place with a solid $17 million debut from 3,534 theaters (PTA: $4,810). Powered by Glen Powell and Josh Brolin, the dystopian action thriller earned an additional $11.2 million overseas, kicking off its run with a $28.2 million global weekend.
Neon’s horror release Keeper opened in seventh place with $2.5 million from 1,950 theaters in the United States and Canada. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the R-rated chiller follows a couple whose idyllic anniversary trip turns into a nightmare as dark forces emerge from the cabin’s past.
Internationally, Yash Raj Films debuted De De Pyaar De 2 to $661,251 from 345 theaters, while Trafalgar Releasing and HYBE brought j-hope Tour: HOPE ON THE STAGE – The Movie to North America for a limited engagement that earned $363,000 domestically and $1.35 million worldwide.
Among specialty releases, Roadside Attractions launched King Ivory to $97,700 in 752 theaters, IFC Films opened Muzzle: City of Wolves to $90,000 in 575 locations and Bleecker Street’s Rebuilding impressed in just two theaters with $29,145 (PTA: $14,573).
Holdovers
20th Century Studios’ (DIS) Predator: Badlands continued its strong run, adding $13.0 million in its second weekend for a domestic total of $66.3 million and a global tally of $136.3 million.
Paramount’s (PSKY) Regretting You remained steady with $4.0 million in its fourth frame, pushing its domestic cume to $44.96 million and global total to $82.46 million.
Universal (CMCSA) and Blumhouse’s Black Phone 2 scared up $2.65 million in weekend five, reaching $74.67 million domestic and $127.72 million worldwide.
Sony Pictures Classics’ (SONY) historical drama Nuremberg earned $2.6 million in its second weekend for a domestic total nearing $8.66 million.
Amazon MGM Studios’ (AMZN) Sarah’s Oil continued to hold well with $2.34 million in weekend two, bringing its domestic cume to $8.66 million.
IMAX highlights
IMAX (IMAX) reported another banner weekend led by Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which generated $12.3 million in China alone and has now amassed $86 million globally in IMAX, becoming the company’s second-highest grossing local-language release ever.
IMAX also contributed $4.2 million to the global debut of The Running Man, while J-Hope’s concert film delivered strong premium-format turnout.
Looking ahead, IMAX prepares for back-to-back major releases: Universal’s (CMCSA) Wicked: For Good and Disney’s (DIS) Zootopia 2.
