Amazon (AMZN) said on Monday it plans to invest an additional $15 billion to build new data center campuses in Northern Indiana, aiming to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies.
The new project will add 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity in the region, the e-commerce giant said, adding that the investment will create 1,100 new jobs.
Shares of the Andy Jassy-led company were up over 2% at $226.08.
Tech giants are racing to build data centers to capitalize and fulfil the exploding demand from AI workloads. Even though AWS is known for big data center hubs in Virginia and Oregon, Amazon’s data center operations reportedly span over 900 facilities in more than 50 countries.
Last year, Amazon announced an investment of $11 billion in St Joseph County in north-central Indiana to build data centers. Since 2010, Amazon said it has invested more than $31.3 billion in Indiana.
Earlier in October, Amazon officially opened its $11B Rainier data center project in Indiana, with the site dedicated to training and running models from generative artificial stalwart Anthropic.
The company also said it is going to invest up to $50 billion to boost AI, supercomputing infrastructure for U.S. agencies.
