Italy’s antitrust authority, AGCM, said on Wednesday that it has expanded the investigation into Meta Platforms (META) concerning allegations that the company abused its dominant position using AI tools on WhatsApp.
The investigation began in July 2025 and now will also cover the new WhatsApp Business Solution terms introduced on October 15, 2025, and new AI interaction features or tools within WhatsApp.
The regulator is concerned that such practices could restrict competition by steering users to Meta’s AI services without their explicit consent.
The violation is “capable of severely and irreparably undermining the contestability of the market, due to consumers’ limited propensity to change their habits, which hampers switching to competing services” the authority said in a statement.
