Apple hires former Google engineer Subramanya to help shore up AI goals; Giannandrea retires

Apple (AAPL) has hired artificial intelligence researcher Amar Subramanya to serve as its vice president of AI.

Subramanya will report directly to Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. Subramanya worked at Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) for 16 years, working his way up from a staff research scientist to vice president of engineering, where he helped develop the AI assistant Gemini.

“AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “In addition to growing his leadership team and AI responsibilities with Amar’s joining, Craig has been instrumental in driving our AI efforts, including overseeing our work to bring a more personalized Siri to users next year.”

Subrmanya joins Apple after a short stint this year at Microsoft (MSFT) as its corporate vice president of AI.

Apple also announced on Monday that John Giannandrea, its senior vice president for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is stepping down from his position and will serve as an advisor to the company before retiring in the spring of 2026. He has worked at Apple for seven years, contributing to the company’s AI and machine learning strategy.

“We are thankful for the role John played in building and advancing our AI work, helping Apple continue to innovate and enrich the lives of our users,” Cook said.
