Meta hires long-time head of Apple’s user interface design team: report

Meta Platforms (META) has hired Alan Dye, who has served as the head of Apple’s (AAPL) user interface design team for a decade, according to Bloomberg.

Dye has held a significant role at Apple since Jony Ive left the company in 2019. Dye was heavily involved in the Vision Pro headset, helped redesign Apple’s operating systems and played a central role in designing Apple’s apps and the Apple Watch, according to the report.

Dye will assume the role of chief design officer for Meta on December 31, the report said. He will be tasked with designing Meta’s consumer devices, such as smart glasses and virtual reality headsets. Apple plans to replace Dye with Steve Lemay.

Lemay, an industry veteran, has worked at Apple since 1999. He has played a role in the development of several products, including OS X, iPhone, iPad, Siri and Apple Watch.

Dye’s departure is one of many high-profile employees who have been hired away recently by Meta. In October, Meta hired Ke Yang, the executive leading Apple’s AI-driven web search initiative. Several top researchers, including Ruoming Pang, founder of Apple’s Foundation Models team, have joined Meta. Other recent exits include Sam Wiseman, Chong Wang and Frank Chu, all of whom worked on advanced AI or search-related projects.

Apple has also lured top talent from competitors. Earlier this week, it hired longtime AI researcher Amar Subramanya from Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) to serve as its new vice president of AI.
