OpenAI’s (OPENAI) ChatGPT continues to reach new milestones, with the number of weekly active users reaching 900M, which represents an increase of 100M in less than two months, according to The Information.
At the same time, usage of Google’s (GOOG)(GOOGL) Gemini is also surging. Data from Sensor Tower shows that during November, Gemini’s monthly active users climbed 30% to 346M, while ChatGPT increased 5% to 810M, the report said. During November, ChatGPT users averaged 17 minutes per day in the app, while Gemini users averaged 11 minutes per day. In March, Gemini users were only averaging about 5 minutes per day in the app, demonstrating deeper usage.
Although the Microsoft (MSFT) and SoftBank-backed (SFTBY)(SFTBF) OpenAI’s ChatGPT is not accelerating as fast as Gemini is at this time, it could be due partly to market saturation. The report points out that Meta Platforms’ (META) Facebook hit 500M users in 2010 and doubled to 1B in two years. Another five years passed before it doubled again to 2B.
Last month, Google released Gemini 3 while OpenAI unfurled ChatGPT-5.1. It was reported earlier this week that Google could be bringing ads to Gemini, which could create a significant monetization effort. For example, Google generated about $36B from YouTube ads in 2024. Facebook’s ad revenues are projected to total $123B in 2025.
