Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), Kroger (KR), and Albertsons (ACI) have all been issued FDA warning letters for continuing to sell a brand of baby formula despite a recall of the product due to botulism contamination.
The recall involves ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. The company initiated a voluntary recall on Nov. 8 of certain lots followed by a full recall on Nov. 11.
All the letters state that although the retailers were notified of the recall on Nov. 11, subsequent visits from regulators found the ByHeart product on shelves of some stores.
The FDA says that 51 babies fed the formula became sick after consuming the ByHeart formula. None have died.
In its letter to Target, the agency chastised the company for failing to demonstrate it has taken corrective action despite multiple follow-up emails from late November into early December.
