SpaceX (SPACE) has been a significant acquirer of Cybertrucks, according to Electrek. Editor-in-Chief Fred Lambert reported that the space launch company may have bought tens of millions of dollars’ worth of Cybertrucks. It may not be a one-time deal, as sources told Electrek that SpaceX (SPACE) may ramp up its Cybertruck purchasing to over 2,000 over time.
The Cybertruck was initially pitched as a high-volume program, with Elon Musk talking about an eventual capacity of roughly 250,000 units per year and some bulls modeling 300,000 to 500,000 units annually. However, industry data indicates Tesla sold about 39,000 Cybertrucks in 2024, and recent reports indicate that volume has not improved in 2025 and inventories are building up. For 2026, analysts no longer model Cybertruck as ramping anywhere near the original 250K-unit level; instead, it is treated as a niche or low-volume product that may see flat or only modestly higher sales versus 2025.
Lambert noted that the SpaceX (SPACE) acquisition of Cybertrucks is legal. “Although SpaceX investors might have concerns about how smart a purchase this is and what the utilization rate of those trucks looks like,” he mused.
SpaceX (SPACE) has not officially filed for an IPO yet but has sent clear signals to investors and employees that it expects to list its shares publicly in 2026. A SpaceX (SPACE) IPO has a good chance of being the largest in history in terms of proceeds.
