President Trump on Friday said that he would soon schedule a meeting with executives of the nation’s top health insurance companies in an effort to bring down the cost of premiums for consumers.
The president, speaking at a news conference to announce drug pricing deals with additional pharmas, said that his success in negotiating those arrangements persuaded him to take aim at health insurers, whom he criticized for raising premiums as the companies experienced tremendous growth in stock returns.
He said he wants the insurers to “ease up and start cutting prices.” The president claimed that many insurers have seen share returns well over 1000%, though he didn’t provide a time period over which those returns occurred.
Trump noted he would like the meeting to happen either next week in Florida or the beginning of January in Washington.
“I’m willing to bet [that] I think they would reduce their prices very, very substantially,” after the meeting, the president added.
