Tencent obtains access to Nvidia Blackwell chips via Japanese third-party: report

  • Chinese tech giant Tencent (TCEHY) has obtained access to Nvidia’s (NVDA) Blackwell GPUs via a Japanese cloud service, even though they are restricted in China, Barron’s reported.
  • The access comes via Tokyo-based Datasection, which recent announced a deal to acquire Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs for use in Japan and Australia. Tencent is the client for the data center, the news outlet added, citing a person briefed on the plan.
  • Tencent is one of China’s largest tech conglomerates and operates in a wide variety of industries, including cloud computing, gaming, social media, e-commerce and more.
  • Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs are currently banned for use in China due to export control curbs placed by the U.S., going back to the Biden administration. However, President Trump said earlier this month that he approved the sale of Nvidia’s H200 GPUs, which are less powerful than its Blackwell line, to China.
  • Tencent, Datasection and Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
